Water cleaning technologies

Water is an indispensable component of all living organisms, whose vital activity is impossible without water. Hygienic value of water is very important for normal flow of physiological processes in a human organism and for creation of favorable sanitary conditions of a life of people. Now maintenance of the population with high quality water became the big problem.

Of no less importance is the problem of the environmental pollution by wastewater (domestic, agricultural, industrial). In such sewage the bacterial pollution level may often exceed the normative value thousands and even millions times. Sewage is wasted to rivers and lakes, and majority of city water supplies take water from them exactly. Hence high-quality purification and disinfection of sewage is important for both the environment and the people health.

The ultrasound has brought the contribution to the decision of a problem of qualitative and inexpensive water cleaning. Examples of positive influence of ultrasound on processes of water cleaning are mentioned below.

For the first time we applied the ultrasonic technology to speed up the coagulation process used to remove impurities from water by the majority of purification plants. Influence of ultrasound on a coagulant solution allows to intensify the flocculation process, to speed up flake sedimentation. As a result the coagulant charge decreases, water quality improves.

Results of operation of ultrasonic device for water processing on a Sokol City Water Supply Service of Vologda Region confirm advantages of ultrasonic treating. The coagulant saving is 15%, thus cleaning effect of chromaticity, turbidity and alkalinity has increased by 6%.

The final stage of potable water preparation is its disinfecting, which goal is destruction of pathogenic bacteria and viruses. Chlorine is used basically for this purpose, as it is strong bactericidal agent. Disadvantages of this method is evident: change of flavouring properties of water, formation of chlorine-organic compounds which are not degradable and have mutagen properties, and also the charges connected to purchase of chlorine.

The simple use of ultrasonic modules while chlorination allows to lower the charge of chlorine because the ultrasound itself has the bactericidal effect and intensifies the action of chlorine. However in many cases it is possible to refuse chlorine at all in favour of more modern and safe methods of disinfection.

We offer essentially new technology of water disinfection: joint application of ultrasonication and ultraviolet irradiation. Due to original the engineering solution the technology is simple and effective, allows to avoid many restrictions which did not let use the ultraviolet to disinfect water for a long time. It needs to emphasize, that our technology has no analogues in the world.

For bacteriological pollution control of water in swimming pools we recommend to use ultrasonic devices with the built-in ultraviolet lamps. Such combination provides proof disinfecting effect and long preservation of water, despite of its repeated infection with intestinal bacteria. It is confirmed with work of device in swimming pool of the Novy Istochnik Sanatorium near Vologda city.

Due to powerful bactericidal action the device with combined use of ultrasound and ultraviolet can successfully be applied to disinfecting various liquids in different industries.
